Our "Uncommon Apples" brand means just that: if we ship it, it's
either a truly rare apple or else a more familiar variety, uncommonly
well grown. We grow highly marketable, taste-tested heirloom
varieties, principally Ashmead's Kernel, Golden Russet, Esopus Spitzenberg,
Wickson, Pomme Grise, and Hudson's Golden Gem (see Apple Varieties for
more information and a full list). But we also grow glowing-orange,
intensely crisp and flavorful Kidd's D-9 Gala that make most other Gala look beige.
Uncommon Apples offer pleasure, nourishment, entertainment,
and often a little history. If Esopus Spitzenberg was Thomas Jefferson's
favorite apple, as reported, it tells us
that Mr. Jefferson liked intense, sharp-sweet, rich flavors. Golden Russet's superb reputation -- for fresh eating, cooking, cellar keeping and fermented cider -- reaches
back to before Independence. Pomme Grise is very close if not identical
to a prized apple of Louis XIV's time! Uncommon indeed.
