Wagon Rides into the Fields on Fair Weekends

Welcome to Harvest 2006 at Poverty Lane Orchards. Opening day for the farm-stand is Saturday, September 2nd, with mums, jams, jellies,  maple syrup, and ready-picked Gingergolds and PaulaReds, which often sell out fairly early in the season.  Pick-Your-Own starts that weekend with tart, rock-hard McIntosh and Cortland on the trees. Sweet cider pressing begins a week or two into September, when the apples sugar up enough. In succeeding weeks more and more varieties come on, both ready-picked and pick-your own.  A week into October, an amazing number of different varieties, from familiar to very rare, will be ready to taste, pick, or just take home.

On weekends in fine weather we tote you into the further fields by wagon if you like. (Some people like just to sit on the wagon and travel back and forth -- no charge.) Weekdays, there's plenty of picking near parking. There are picnic tables, fresh air, views of the Connecticut River valley and plenty of space to run around. There's a nice tall fence around the whole place, so you can not lose the kids. You may even take your (peaceable) dogs out with you, as long as you scoop!

Most apple crops up here look good, in spite of the curious weather this year. The pears came through! Call for availability (they sell out fast).  For specific details on varieties, availability, or any other questions, call (603)448-1511 or email info@povertylaneorchards.com. Uncertainty is part of farming, and most surprises will be pleasant, but if you plan to come up for a special reason, please check ahead.

By mid-September, MacIntosh and Cortland are just unbelievably delicious. Macouns come on about the third week in September, drawing people from miles around who crave that rare Macoun quality. Late-September and early October we open the Gala orchard for pick-your-own. Northern-grown Galas taste and look gorgeous, and keep well. Call or email with questions on other varieties -- many many more grow here.

As September winds on, the classic round red apples sweeten somewhat, but keep their amazing snap. And now the rare, delightful heirlooms start to come on: it's fascinating to wander and choose among dozens of different varieties that were familiar in earlier times -- one of our orchards is a living apple encyclopedia. Again, call with questions: (603)448-1511 or use info@povertylaneorchards.com.
