Farnum Hill barrel batches

First ‘Dooryard’ of 2018: #1813/STEM

In Farnum Hill Dooryard #1813, six apples dominate: Dabinett, Chisel Jersey, and Yarlington Mill (bittersweet), Esopus Spitzenberg and Ashmead’s Kernel (sharp), and Golden Russet (fruity), all harvested in 2017. Combined, they produce bright acidity, round soft bitterness, and solid tannic structure , suffused with romas and flavors of ripe stone fruits, citrus, whisky, tropics, and pear.  The whole cornucopia is enhanced by very slight sweetness, and a gentle bubble. Available only at Stem Cider, in Denver, Colorado, on tap.

‘Dooryard’ in the dooryard: Thirsty Thursday

Locally, Farnum Hill Dooryard Ciders can be whatever we’re tapping, week to week. Growler customers buy a half-gallon brown glass jug at the orchard for three dollars; each refill costs ten dollars on Thursdays and twelve on other days during orchard retail seasons. Sometimes the cider is a strong bittersweet, sometimes it’s something more familiar, sometimes you have choices.  Send a note and we’ll take care of that for you! Dooryard’ is an old/new idea, typical of this place. Abroad, many cider orchards do big business at the farm, where locals refill their empties with whatever the cider-maker taps that day. In 2008 our dooryard began drawing enough cider explorers so we could do small business the same way.   Then in 2011, bottled and kegged Dooryard ciders went to market. Each bottle or keg sports a Dooryard batch #, clickable below for batch notes. Six years on, U.S. ciderphiles are multiplying, and exploring boldly. We hope the character of each FHC ‘Dooryard’ offers rare sensory moments. HOWEVER: If Farnum Hill is new to you, be aware that none of our ciders is ever sweet. They range from radically dry to barely off-dry. Fruity, aromatic, singular, intensified by the growing conditions on our chilly northern slopes — just not sweet.
